The Associated General Contractors of America's 2022 Workforce Survey results show that 91% of contractors are having difficulty filling positions, with Granite Construction’s Chief Executive Officer, Kyle Larkin stating “We’re seeing a historically tight construction labor market become even more competitive as we emerge from the pandemic. The current labor market is the most challenging I’ve seen in our industry.”
The $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is also expected to create hundreds of thousands of new job openings over its five-year duration, but labor shortages in construction could impede the act with it being estimated that the IIJA will lead to a shortfall of workers by 160,000 in the contractor/subcontractor sector by 2028.
